Trent Lock SAC is well placed to teach canoeing and kayaking. Have you ever sat and played in a canoe and thought “This is fun; I’d like to do more of this?” Well, now’s your chance. We have around 40 kayaks and 10 open canoes. A team of BCU Level 1 to 3 coaches plus others with Scouts permits. Trent Lock is a good centre for short expeditions on the River Trent, Soar, Derwent and Erewash as well as the Erewash canal. Several groups use the Trent Lock Centre as a good overnight stop on expeditions down the river Like Dinghy Sailing, we are able to offer a range of paddle sport courses for qualifications of the governing body known as British Canoeing.

Pioneering & Rafting

We have an array of equipment – poles, lashing ropes, heavier ropes, block & tackle. Build a raft with barrels, bridges, siege engines, whatever you like. Building traditional rafts is one of the most popular activities at weekend camps – Scouts and Guides love getting wet and this is a great team building activity! We have a collection of plastic barrels and wooden poles together with ‘do-it-yourself’ instructions so that anyone can come and have a go. Rafts can be tethered to the bank or 'paddled' across the river. As an adventurous activity, helmets and buoyancy aids will be provided

Archery

Archery can be provided at the centre and is one of our popular activities. As an adventurous activity and sport, it is delivered by qualified Archery GB instructors, making it safe and enjoyable. Small groups of Scouts and Guides can take turns on the range, initially tutored on a one-to-one basis to achieve a worthwhile level of competence.

Dinghy Sailing

We have a team of Scout permit holders along with RYA Dinghy Instructors and RYA Senior Instructions who can supervise sailing at weekends. Our fleet includes a variety of sailing dinghies, including Toppers, Topper Topaz, Wayfarers and GP 14's. Since 1980 Trent Lock SAC has held recognition as an RYA Training Centre which provides a unique opportunity to deliver RYA courses for youth sailing, specialist module and powerboating qualifications. This is overseen our the RYA Training Centre Principle and RYA Senior Instructor.

Fire Lighting

Altar fires available at the site and a well stocked wood pile for fire lighting and backwoods cooking. We have a number of half barrels on stands as well as a campfire circle at the down stream end of the site. The campfire circle is great for fire lighting, backwoods cooking as well as evening campfires.

Orienteering

Situated on a remote river bank, the centre is an ideal place to organise an orienteering activity. Using compass and activity sheets, visitors can explore the neighbouring area and experience the outdoors in safety. We have marked out two courses in the neighbouring countryside. One course is for beginners. It is about half a mile long and circuits the adjacent field. By standing on the flood bank leaders can keep an eye on the participants all the way round the course. The other course is about two miles long and goes over to Redhill on the River Soar and back.

Pond Dipping

Pond Dipping is a great way to discover a whole new world of wildlife. If you have your own pond, it is also a way to investigate if it's healthy or not and what wildlife it could be missing. Some of the animals you can find when pond dipping include larva, snails, shrimp, pond skaters, beetles and other bugs, as well as bigger animals like frogs, toads and newts. All you need for pond dipping is a net and a plastic tub. A magnifying glass is useful to view the pond creatures easily. A pond life guide will help you identify your findings. We keep a set of equipment for pond dipping at the centre. Nets and containers must be clean as diseases can be transferred if they are contaminated - bad news for wildlife like frogs and newts. Find a pond to dip into, collect some water and, then trail your net through to pick up creatures. Try and find out more about the creatures wriggling and writhing in your net.

Pulling

Pulling (fixed seat rowing) is propelling an open craft primarily by the use of oars where there is fixed seating, and often includes a coxswain and a crew. We have a number of rowing boats for individuals, pair or small crews. Take up your oars and cut through the water as you work towards your Pulling activity badge.
