Trent Lock has an excellent safety record and we take this seriously. We regularly review our policies and update them as necessary to ensure we can provide a safe and enjoyable experience. Therefore, we require all members undertake site-specific induction training.

As part of The Scout Association, adult members involved in leadership are required to attend basic training. Known as Modules 1 & 3, the training covers safeguarding as well as an introduction to Scouting.

Instructors: We follow the Scout Association's permit scheme to assess instructors and issue permits to supervise or lead various activities. In addition, we follow recognition schemes from a number of external organisations, including Canoe England, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and Archery GB (GNAS) .

Equipment: Water actvities are classified as adventurous. We provide helmets and buoyancy aids for our activities and these are checked at appropriate intervals for signs of wear and tear. Where necessary, equipment is either repaired or replaced.

CRB: As part of Safeguarding, all adult staff members are checked with the Criminal Records Bureau. The British Canoe Union (BCU) also require a further CRB for all instructors involved with the young and vulnerable.

First Aid: our instructors are encouraged to undertake First Aid training and hypothermia awareness. Courses are run throughout the year on an ad-hoc basis, according to demand. On-site, First Aid kits are available, being suitable for the activities taking place. Our staff cabin is also equipped with an extensive first aid kit.

Health and Safety: this is addressed throughout the site in a number of ways, including anti-bacterial hand sanitisers placed around the buildings. Being a busy campsite, we also require visitors bring and wear protective footwear, such as trainers. Risk assessments are reviewed accordingly and regularly undertaken during evening and weekend activities.

Other Precautions: During the summer months, UV protection is essential. We encourage everyone to take this seriously and apply copious amounts of sun lotion. For those with glasses, spectacle straps are necessary to avoid loss.
